I was a classmate of Bill's at NYU in 1984-86 (GSAS Sociology). He was a serious guy, but not without a wry sense of humor. We met early on in my program, at a welcome party given by Prof. Heydebrand for incoming students. It is a shock to learn of Bill's death, as I visited for the first time today NYU's FB web sites. (I have only infrequently been in touch with the University.)

My belated, sincere condolences to the Pittman family. He was a good friend.

Happened across the book-(AA the way it began)-I was sober about 15 years at the time-----it gave me answers to things about AA and Alcoholism that made my life easier. I just celebrated 39 years sober. Bill Pitman the most thorough
research/writer I ever read. I am sure he is in a better place.
He needs no call,no letter, no film. Now we can all just pause in our busy life and say Bill we miss you---but will treasure you always for what you left behind.

I worked for several years with Bill at Glen Abbey Books in Seattle. He was unfailingly kind, even-tempered, and encouraging. He involved me in much more than the day-to-day processes of publishing, arranging for me to attend several large book shows and even to supervise book signings for one of our authors. Bill was always willing to share his expertise and his wonderful sense of humor with those around him. Although I'd not seen him since he moved to Hazelden, I will miss him very much. He was a rock when I needed one. Thanks, Bill!

I first met Bill in 1985 while I was at Fellowship Club. He always donated copies of the Grapevine for residents to read. Over the years we ran into each other a number of other times both in New York and in MN. He was an inspiration in early sobriety and I admired his work. Just checking the AA history website on my anniversary and was not aware he passed away.

I am so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He was so generous in helping me at the Hazelden-Pittman Archives when I was working on my dissertation several years ago. His work on temperance and addiction has been a tremendous help to me. I am so grateful for his encouragement of my work.
