Name:

Charlie Bishop, Jr.

Location:

Wheeling, WV, USA

Comments:

After 25 years of labor at AA in New York,
Glen Abbey Books in Seattle and Hazelden in
Minnesota, Bill disappeared for several years "to go fishing." No one could
find him. His self-imposed and mysterious sabbatical was not empty. I like to think
he was talking with his Higher Power and planning his memoirs or a Renaissance for the addiction field or some new "Grand Plan."
He was a good fisherman and fisher of men. He caught many fish and many drunks. And he didn't lie about either. I will miss him
greatly and gratefully. God bless Bill and his family.

I've considered Bill as one of our most effective A.A. Historians. His book, "The Way It Began" was the book that initiated my interest in the way it began. His writings since then have continued to keep that interest alive. He was sincerely appreciated and he will be sincerely missed.

Bill Pittman was a very good friend. He visited us here in Toledo and always had new information to share. AA history was his passion and his contribution to it is large. I authored a book with Bill and am also indebted to him for publishing two of my books: "My Search for Bill W." and "Ebby: the Man Who Sponsored Bill W." We will all miss him.

Bill will be rememberd and missed. It was only the other week while I was at Wilson House visiting I asked if anyone had heard from Bill. I guess he was weighing on my mind and heart and I just wanted to reach out and once again, connect with him.

As a member of the AA history community, Bill was instrumental in working with other authors, historians and archivists in bringing out AA's history to the world. We've shared the podium together, spoken on the phone and in person and collaborated on a few things over the years. I treasure having known him and will be grateful always for being a part of my sobriety journey. Thank you Bill for who you are and all you've done. God bless...

I met Bill at Dr Bob's house in Akron, Ohio in 1993. I was actually looking for Charlie Bishop and he dialed Charlie up on his cell phone and handed it to me! He was the only man there, that hot summer day, wearing a three piece suit.
I love his 12 Step Prayer book. In his books, I have found, that he tells it like it is, not how he would like you to believe it. No spin, just the words for you to read and interpret as you see fit. That is a good historian in my opinion. Thanks Bill, you'll be the main speaker tonight and Joe McQ gets to sit down and rest.
