Charlie and Joe kept things simple and provided the best step guidance I've seen in over 27 years of continuous sobriety (thanks to folks like Joe and Charlie). I am so sorry for our loss! Best wishes and lots of prayers to Charlie's family. God bless, Marcia Henning

It was in early in July 1986, after I was "invited" by a local Judge to attend AA, that I found myself gripped by the fear that I might drink again. After only several days of going without, I was so shaken by the thought of going back to jail for taking a drink, that I axiously made my way to an AA meeting several miles from where I was residing (my mothers home). The meeting, according to the shcedule I was given from the first time I reluctantly arrived, stated that there was an open, discussion meeting begining at 1:00 PM. When I arrived, I noted that there were no vehicles in the parking lot but I amde my way inside, determined not to drink. To my horror...no one was there! Where was that hand of AA reaching out to meet me? I thought. Too afraid to leave, I sat down and noticed a casset player on a coffee table. Next to it was a set of tapes called "
The Big Book Comes Alive". I knew little of our text at that time and had not really read anything from it. I put in tape 1 and heard a man say that his name was Charlie and that he had not found it necessary to take a drink for...I thought he said several thousand days! I was agast! No one could possibly have not had a drink for that long! I also heard a fellow call himself Joe...he also claimed several thousand days without one single drink! I thought that this must be a comedy tape to ease the discomfort of the alcoholics...actually it was quite funny and for the first time in years, I found myself laughing out loud so hard that it hurt my stomach!
People in AA ahd told me of this "Big Book" and I thought, how could a book written by some old drunks in 1939 have any significance to me and MY problems. As I listened to those tapes the first time, I suddenly realized that, God had pput me exactly where I needed to be to hear AA's message of hope and recovery. AA and I will dearly miss these two good souls who led me to where the answers to all my problems are; the Big Book of AA. thanks to God and AA, I hvae not found it necessary to take a drink or any mind or mood altering substances now for 9071 today. God Bless

Thank you for sharing Charlie with us. I am sure it was not easy to have him away so much. He had a gift that he passed on to others

Charlie was a tremendous help to me and my family when I was first getting sober in 1993. I would put a tape on in the car with all 4 kids and my wife and we'd listen while on family trips to whereever. Thank you for helping him share his wisdom and humility with all the rest of us.

I'm sad to hear of Charlie's passing. My condolences to the family. I met and attended a Joe and Charlie weekend in 2004 in Torrance. It was amazing...prior to that the Big Book of AA, was an outdated text I didn't understand. Today I listen to the CD's and also attend Joe & Charlie Step Workshops, at least 1 per year, last year I did it twice. Charlies legacy and teaching and dedication lives on in my community. I cherish this information, and I shall now cherish the autograph I have of Charlie in my Big Book. RIP...thank you for touching my life and being a part of my journey!
